The Lantern of the Laughless Saint: Skills and Characters

In this guide, I explain what The Lantern of the Laughless Saint is, how the Skills system works, and what Skill Adjustments each available race starts with. I also cover the Umbrite, Al-Fijhani, Ruggite, Thrakh, and Calyx backgrounds and their unique characteristics.

The Lantern of the Laughless Saint Guides

Skills and Character Creation

Below you will find a list of possible characters you can start The Lantern of the Laughless Saint with, and their effects on the game. As you level up, you can allocate Skill Points to your desired Skills or increase your Skills by performing relevant actions.

Skills

I can view all of my Skills after creating my character. Each time I level up, I receive 5 Skill Points that I can freely distribute among my available Skills.

I do not always need to spend Skill Points to increase a Skill. I can also improve Skills by performing related actions. For example, Skills such as Sprinting, Swimming, and Sneaking naturally increase as I use them, while Combat Skills may be more difficult to raise quickly.

Because of this, I may prefer to save my Skill Points for Skills that are harder to improve through regular gameplay.

Some races begin with Negative Skill Adjustments. For example, a Calyx starts with -10 Swimming, which means I begin the game with an actual Swimming Skill value of -10.

In the Skills tab of the main menu, I can see a description of each selected Skill, my current Skill Level, a progress bar showing advancement toward the next Skill increase, and a “+” button for spending available Skill Points.

I may also want to wait before spending Skill Points. Each Skill Level normally increases the Experience required to raise that Skill again, while spending a Skill Point immediately increases the Skill without requiring that Experience.

Umbrite (Faithful Militant)

Skill Adjustments

  • +5 One-Handed
  • +5 Two-Handed
  • +5 Channeling

Umbrites worship Queen Umbrinox, who claims to be the one true god and the creator of all other gods and the world itself. As an Umbrite, I may not necessarily be a devoted worshipper, but I grew up among the faithful and have ties to the surrounding baronies.

Al-Fijhani (Cunning Trader)

Skill Adjustments

  • +15% Better Prices
  • +15 Lockpicking
  • -20 Max Health

Al-Fijhani men and women are taught from a young age to identify unmet needs in the world and take advantage of them. Trading is considered one of their noblest pursuits, and gaining status is important whether it comes through bartering, plundering, or magic.

Ruggite (Pale Acolyte)

Skill Adjustments

  • +100 Max Magic Power
  • -30 Max Stamina
  • 50% Weakness to Fire
  • +1 Starting Spell

Ruggites are respected worshippers of Ruggul the Wrathul, the god who lives in the sky. As a Ruggite, I am centuries old, pale, and sickly, but my years under the light of Ruggul have given me enhanced magical abilities.

Thrakh (Reptilian Wanderer)

Skill Adjustments

  • +50 Max Carry Weight
  • +15 Swimming
  • -10 Archery

The Thrakh are a reptilian race that once ruled a powerful civilization that has since fallen into ruin. Their legacy has faded, while their descendants continue to wander and generally keep to themselves. Outsiders rarely show them generosity, so the Thrakh have learned to survive without relying on others.

Calyx (Psionic Feline)

Skill Adjustments

  • +15 Psionics
  • -5 Total Armor Rating (Not the Skill)
  • -10 Swimming
  • +1 Spell (Night Eye)

The Calyx live throughout the domain of man and settle wherever they choose. They follow the call of nature and have adapted to the wild world around them. With Night Eye, I can see shapes in complete darkness or inside unlit caves where humans would otherwise be unable to see.

The Calyx are held to a lower standard than other bipedal races because many believe that wherever a Calyx appears, misfortune is likely to follow.
