Learn all about backpacks, vehicle storage, carry-on items, and base storage at VEIN in this all items guide.
All Items & Carrying and Storage
This guide covers everything about backpacks, vehicle storage, item transport, and base storage in VEIN, based on the experimental demo prior to release. All listed weights are in pounds (lbs), though the full game supports both imperial and metric units.
Backpacks
In VEIN, backpacks are essential for managing inventory and carrying loot. Below is a list of all backpacks available in the experimental demo.
| Backpack Type | Weight Capacity | Location / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| School Backpack | 50 lbs | Commonly found throughout the game world. |
| Gym Bag | 75 lbs | Frequently found in schools; relatively common. |
| Hiking Backpack | 100 lbs | Exclusive to the cavern area in the demo. |
| Combat Pack | 150 lbs | Looted from dead soldier zombies. |

Vehicles and Cargo Capacity
Vehicles are vital for transporting loot from scavenging zones to your base. Each vehicle has its own storage capacity and handling characteristics.
All glove boxes have a standard capacity of 50 lbs.
| Vehicle Type | Cargo Capacity | Storage Details / Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Motorcycle, Bus, Tractor | None (except glove box) | Minimal or no cargo storage. |
| Cars, Campers/RVs, Sports Cars, UTVs | 300 lbs | RV storage is inside (cabinet); sports car trunk located at the front. |
| Pickups, Ambulance | 500 lbs | Balanced cargo and accessibility. |
| SUVs | 700 lbs | Good mix of speed and capacity. |
| Vans | 1,000 lbs | Excellent for hauling large quantities of loot. |
| Delivery/Box Trucks | 1,200 lbs | Highest storage, accessible from inside only. |
Note: Larger trucks require you to enter the vehicle to store items, while smaller ones allow external loading. Be cautious — when exiting a vehicle, your character becomes disarmed, so always reequip your weapon before stepping out.
Recommended Vehicles:
- Best Overall: Van – ideal balance of capacity, speed, and control.
- For Quick Runs: Police Car – fast, fun, and effective for short looting trips.
- Fastest Option: Sports Car (excluding the motorcycle).
Efficient Loading and Unloading
Quick Loading Tips
- Press J to transfer all items from one tab.
- Press H to dump your entire inventory (up to capacity limits).
If the vehicle’s storage exceeds its capacity, nothing transfers.
To unload, go tab-by-tab and use H to retrieve each type of item. Avoid overloading yourself — move heavy materials (e.g., limestone, car parts) before lighter loot.
Weight Management
Prioritize high-value, heavy resources. Dismantle unnecessary items before storage. Avoid traveling while encumbered, as it significantly slows your movement, especially when surrounded by zombies.
Transporting Large Items
Large objects (e.g., solar panels, fridges, drink machines, mounts) can be physically moved to your base. Players typically drag items to a nearby vehicle and then transport them.
Tips:
- Large trucks in the demo often bugged when hauling big items — smaller vehicles (like police cars) were more stable.
- Avoid hitting zombies while transporting items; physics glitches could cause loss or damage.
- To place objects on rooftops, use vehicles or stack buildable structures nearby and move items step-by-step.
Recent updates increased movement range, making it much easier to relocate heavy objects. However, moving heavy items still causes exhaustion, soreness, and fatigue.
Why Collect Large Items?
As in-game utilities (power, water) shut down over time, items like solar panels, work tables, and appliances become valuable. Collecting them saves materials for fortifications and long-term survival.
Plus, it’s your world customize it how you like. Build scenic or thematic setups at your base and enjoy the roleplay aspect.
Base Storage and Organization
You can use a variety of storage solutions in VEIN from crafted crates to repurposed furniture.
Craftable and Found Storage
| Storage Type | Capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small Crate | 150 lbs | Craftable; good for early storage. |
| Large Crate | 300 lbs | Use capital letters for clear labels. |
| Material Bin | 500 lbs | Holds scrap materials only. |
| Crafted Trash Can | 440 lbs | Accepts all item types; best mass storage. |
| In-Game Trash Bin | 75 lbs | Found in buildings. |
| Storage Tote | 35 lbs | Moveable; can be labeled. |
In the demo, dropped items did not despawn, so using the ground as temporary storage was viable.
Tip: Press B → Storage to craft new containers. Label them for efficient organization.
Workstations and Tool Storage
Workstations feature internal storage that scales with upgrades.
| Workstation | Capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Workbench | 150 lbs | Basic crafting station. |
| Advanced Workbench | 200 lbs | Higher-tier crafting. |
| Fabrication Workbench | 300 lbs | For advanced materials and equipment. |
Utility Cabinets (UCs) also have internal storage and consume materials if decay is enabled. Building multiple UCs increases resource consumption.
Water Storage Solutions
| Item | Capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fluid Barrel | 6,661 fl oz | Largest craftable water container. |
| Rain Collector | ~3× Barrel Capacity | Automatically refills with rainfall. |
| Large Water Jug | Varies | Non-craftable but highly practical. |
Other usable items include buckets, tubs, bottles, and large containers. Fill and store them near sinks for convenience.
Food Storage and Refrigeration
| Refrigerator Type | Capacity | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Fridge | 250 lbs | Found in bars/taverns; best cooling unit (not movable in early demo versions). |
| Regular Fridge | 125 lbs | Common in houses. |
| Craftable Fridge/Freezer | Varies | Made via crafting menu (B). |
Smaller coolers and lunchboxes can also store food but offer limited preservation. Note: Canned goods spoil faster than expected in the demo.
Combat and Survival Tip
Avoid fighting hordes unarmed. Always equip armor (combat helmet, vest, knee pads, etc.) to increase damage resistance. Upon death, you may simply need to rearm and reclaim your zombie self.
When you hear a horde scream, run to your car immediately. Encumbrance or sickness drastically reduces your mobility — potentially leading to your death.
