In the horror game Until Dawn, players are given 8 unique heroes to control, and depending on your actions, not all of them will survive to the end.
Tips
Let’s start with some recommendations that will help you keep all the characters alive and get a good ending:
- Try your best to ensure that Jessica, Matt, and Josh stay alive until the end of Episode 10, as this will determine the ending you receive.
- During the final scene, make sure that Sam, Emily, Ashley, and Mike are inside the cabin.
- In the last scene, have Sam help Mike, and then choose the “Hide” option, allowing the characters inside the building to escape. Do not select the “Switch” option, as the girl will blow up the building. When everyone leaves the house, a cutscene will show Sam running out and detonating the cabin along the way.
Keeping All Characters Alive
Jessica
To save Jessica, you’ll need to perform several actions quickly. As soon as she’s abducted from the guest house through the window, immediately run after her and choose the most dangerous routes, making sure to slide down the slope. The next time you see Jessica will be in Episode 9 in the mine.
While playing as Jessica, you will have to save her life twice. The first time, choose to hide from the Wendigo instead of running. The second time, when given the options “Run” or “Break Through,” select the latter.
Josh
To save Josh, you need to find all the clues related to the twins. This way, he can recognize the tattoo on his sister’s hand. His survival also depends on whether Sam finds Hannah’s diary while underground. However, Josh will still turn into a Wendigo in the end.
Emily
If you don’t want Emily to meet her end, activate the lift in Episode 8 and go up. Otherwise, you’ll see her eyes getting pierced—not a pleasant sight.
This isn’t the only condition for her survival. You also need to:
- Complete all QTEs (Quick Time Events) flawlessly during the escape scene, which ends after jumping onto the conveyor belt. If you fail, Emily’s eyes will be pierced again.
- While sliding down the conveyor belt, press the correct buttons on the gamepad to avoid getting crushed.
- In the same episode, if Emily gets bitten by a monster, Mike may decide to shoot her. You can either pull the trigger or let her live. To avoid the bite, Emily needs to have a flare gun, which can be obtained when on the fire tower.
In the final chapter, her survival will depend on Sam’s actions. If Sam activates the switch too early, the house where Emily is will explode.
Matt
When you gain control of Matt, do not shoot at the animals in Episode 6 and do not try to help Emily hanging from the fire tower that is about to fall. If you’re unsure what to do, just jump to a safe spot away from the structure.
If you decide to save Emily, Matt will fall into the mine and come face-to-face with the Wendigo. However, this isn’t necessarily the end for him—he can escape if he has a flare gun (Emily can give it to him on the fire tower) with at least one shot left. Do not fire it earlier when on the tower.
In Episode 10, Matt can survive if he chooses to go straight ahead and hide from the Wendigo. Other options usually lead to his death.
Chris
In Episode 7, Chris will find a gun and will have to choose whom to shoot—himself or Ashley. Point the gun at yourself. You’ll make the shot, but nothing will happen since the bullets are blanks. This action is necessary so that in Episode 8, Ashley lets Chris into the house when a monster chases him (otherwise, she’ll leave him to be torn apart by the creature). Make sure to shoot accurately at the Wendigo during the chase, or Chris will die.
In Episode 9, Ashley hears Jessica’s voice in the mine. If she decides to investigate and open the hatch, she will die instantly. Chris will then follow and find her blood-covered hat. If you send him to investigate the hatch, he will die as well. Trying to run will result in the monster attacking from above and killing him. Keep Ashley away from the hatch to avoid this outcome.
Sam
Throughout the game, Sam plays the role of a real survivor, so she cannot die no matter what choices you make. The only time her life is truly at risk is at the very end. When hiding from the monster in the house, stand still and press all the buttons correctly—this way, Sam will survive. Any movement will lead to her death.
Ashley
While playing as Chris, you will need to decide whom to kill—Ashley or Josh. Choose to saw Josh in half.
In Episode 9, while playing as Ashley, you will hear strange noises in the mine coming from the hatch on the floor. Ignore them and continue following the other characters. If you decide to check the hatch, you will die at the hands of the Wendigo.
In Episode 10, Ashley’s survival will entirely depend on Sam. If Sam activates the switch too early, the house will blow up along with Ashley inside.
Mike
Another lucky character who can’t die until the very end, regardless of your choices. In Episode 10, press all the correct buttons during QTEs without any mistakes. When Sam is given the choice to “Help Mike” or “Hit the Switch,” choose the first option. If Sam has already died, Mike will automatically sacrifice himself and blow up the house.
